Truro House
Our clients, two creatives asked us to design and furnish their summer home nestled in Truro, MA, a summer vacation community.
The home designed in the style of a typical Cape Cod house has many of these key elements with its wood frame, multipaned windows, steep pitched gable roofs and box plan layouts each attached to the other. The house sits on a sizable portion of land surrounded by large trees and shrubbery and is close to several beautiful Cape Cod beaches.
When approaching the property, one is greeted by a sprawling customized circular cobblestone driveway. There is a lit stone path leading to the front door with a larger stone used as a step up to the porch. The underside of the porch roof is painted blue, a nod to a Cape tradition originating from the Gulla Ceechee Culture where the color blue, known as “haint blue,” was believed to ward off evil spirts or “haints” by mimicking the sky or water which these spirits could not cross. Custom designed rain chains were installed in lieu of traditional downspouts adding aesthetic charm to the exterior of the home.
The intended use for the house was to be work and relaxation. NMA designed the home to accommodate our clients wishes with offices on the lower level for remote work and an artist space tucked into a solitary room on the second floor overlooking the landscape and trees. The main floor is used for living space. There is a large master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, a guest bedroom with a secondary bath and a living, dining kitchen area with an adjoining relaxation room. NMA used light neutral colors to evoke a sense of serenity and tranquility reflective of beach colors. The high vaulted ceilings throughout provide an open airy atmosphere throughout the living space. The focal point of the dining area is a Lindsey Adelman Knotty Bubble Chandelier, a sculptural light fixture which hangs from knotted rope that is reminiscent of underwater bubbles or floating buoys in the open sea. The relaxation room is centered on an electric custom designed fireplace and provides a quiet place to read. This space has two oversized doors which open to a wraparound deck connecting the outdoors with the indoors and offers an optimal view of the rear yard year-round.
The back yard, a vacationer’s paradise, has a wraparound deck for outdoor dining and seating. As you step off the deck, you are greeted by a saltwater heated pool a footstep away. A custom wood trellis serves as a lounging area by the pool for relaxing outdoors not in direct sunlight. The entire backyard is framed by beautiful trees and lush landscaping which also provides a sense of privacy. A custom shadow box fence also offers reinforced privacy. A dip in the saltwater pool followed by the custom outdoor shower is a refreshing experience. A custom outdoor stone grill blends perfectly with the rear yard’s hardscape. On the far side of the yard a petite pool house sits proud and inviting for guests and pool amenities.
