Brill Residence Conversion
NEW YORK, NY - August 11, 2008 – Nicole Migeon Architect’s latest residential project was the renovation of the Upper East Side Brill Residence.
Guided by the way materials transform a room, NMA’s use of custom millwork, glass and artful lighting achieves a sleek, modern apartment that is elegant and inviting as well as highly functional.

The unifying feature of the design is in the floor, an uninterrupted expanse of rectangular basalt stone tiles that extend from the master bathroom to the porch attached to the living room. NMA defines the separate spaces by arrangements of furnishings and lights.
Entering the apartment, the visitor is met with an etched wall of dynamically-lit blue Bendheim glass, which allows the resident to set the perfect mood for the occasion. Using the Phillips LED Color Kinetics system, the subtle recessed designs can be backlit with any color or progression of colors with the turn of a concealed knob.

The entrance hallway is lined with large maple millwork shelves, raised two inches above the basalt floor to appear as if they are floating. They follow the bend of the wall to become a bar with glass cabinets that mirror the large windows on the other side of the living room.

Track lighting draws attention to a continuation of the millwork in the living room, this time with blue glass panels that easily move to display or conceal different objects, or become aspects of the design themselves.

The centerpiece of the dining room is the “Birdie Chandelier,” a work by Ingo Maurer, an artist featured in the New York Museum of Modern Art. Comprised of twelve low-voltage bulbs attached to goosefeather wings, this chandelier adds an exciting, artistic flair to the ambiance.

Throughout the apartment, NMA has designed several large pieces of furniture to compliment the clients’ high-end modern and contemporary furnishing from DDC, Knoll, Roche-Bobois, and Ron Arad.
The master bedroom is a statement of clean functionality. Millwork shelving lines the walls. In the corner of the room where two large windows meet there is a desk. NMA designed the desk so that the client would feel as if she was “sitting in a tree house.” NMA also custom designed the master bed in its entirety — the platform upon which it lies, as well as the tables, drawers and shelves that are part of the single unit.
Off the bedroom is the large and stately master bath. The custom-designed tub of basalt rises naturally from the floor to a white Thassos counter that extends horizontally along the bathroom wall.

The wall itself is made of mirrors and semi-reflective green-blue stained glass tiles, providing the perfect backdrop for ornate Boffi shelving.
As a successful combination of utility and aesthetic design, the Brill Residence is a statement of functional elegance.
