St. Dominic’s Hospital Medical Spa at the Township at Colony Park Nears Construction

Jackson, MS – October 1, 2009 - NMA’s latest project is the design of Saint Dominic’s Hospital Medical Spa in Jackson, Mississippi. The finished design integrates elegant contemporary details with the complex operations of a state-of-the-art medical spa.

The core of the spa is a long central hallway with the ceilings and floors finished in teak planks. The magnetic visual effect draws patrons inward into the unique space and world of the spa. Patrons arrive through the elevator from the fitness center and enter the Reception Area. The reception staff sit at custom teak millwork desks that protrude seamlessly from the floor. The desk surfaces are topped with a warm reflective orange resin. Comfortable upholstered banquettes run along the walls of the waiting area, which ends with a set of Smart glass electric doors: floor to ceiling clear glass walls that can be made opaque with a flick of a switch.

A sliding glass wall opens into the Green Room, a versatile lounge that can be used as a relaxation area or party space. The room is surrounded by large windows that can be completely opened in the summertime, exposing the lush Green Roof and blurring the line between indoor and outdoor space. A stepping stone path runs through the rooftop growth of sedum plants.

In the Green Room patrons relax on banquette seating set on a floating platform, backed by custom planters filled with vegetation. A teardrop-shaped hand-blown glass chandelier hangs above. A custom fountain made of teak planks emerges from the floor and the sound of flowing water contributes to the natural ambiance of the space.

After checking in at Reception, the patron is led into the Changing Rooms. The Changing Rooms are symmetrically aligned: the women’s in the north wing and the men’s in the south wing. The ladies first pass through a Salon outfitted with custom orange laminate manicure/pedicure stations, marble styling stations, and mirrored walls.

The Changing Rooms are finished with ridged porcelain tiles, Nublado marble, and cream-colored porcelain floors. Patrons stow their items in teak laminate lockers. Stone water walls flow into teak basins, filling the room with the soothing sound of cascading water. A custom infrared sauna, completely finished in hemlock, can be used for medically specific needs and a porcelain-lined steam room is available for relaxing. The bathrooms feature “Electric” mirrors with recessed light fixtures and custom marble vanities.

Off the Changing Rooms is the Lounge, a comfortable space to relax while awaiting treatment. High-backed upholstered banquettes stretch around the walls. Tea tables and ottomans create a cozy atmosphere while a drop ceiling made of dewdrop resin casts a soft shimmering light over the room.

A corridor leads from the Lounge to the Treatment Rooms. The Treatment Rooms are finished with pearlescent wall coverings, white ceasarstone countertops, circular orange glass backsplashes, and custom cabinetry and millwork. The windows look out onto the green roof while orange drapes can be drawn for privacy.

In the south side of the building is an oversized Treatment Room to accommodate couples and two multifunctional Wellness Rooms for specialists and presentations. Wet treatment rooms are available for Hydrotherapy and Vichy Treatments.

In the back is tucked the administrative area and offices, purposefully secluded so as not to detract from the spa environment. Here are the doctor’s offices, staff rooms, administrative offices, and the medical lab.

St. Dominic’s Hospital Medical Spa is one of the first medical spas to be opened by a private hospital. This marks an important shift in medical ideology as hospitals begin to recognize the value of preventative medicine. NMA has created a space that rejuvenates the mind, body, and spirit without compromising the principles of beautiful, functional design.
