A School Reunion

Nicole recently hosted the reunion for Roland Park Country Day School, her high school, in the NMA gallery space. New York-based RPCS alumni of all ages came to celebrate and catch up with the school’s headmistress. Work was shown by photographer Willy Somma and the event was catered by Meredith, a fellow RPCS alum.

Painting Art Opening

NMA was in a flurry of activity as we prepared for the art opening of painter Douglas Padgett. New assistant Tom Willkens spent a sunny Sunday morning helping Doug and Nicole hang the paintings for the event. To mark the season, Rebecca picked out bittersweet branches for the office planters. Opening night was a lively gathering with many of NMA’s friends and associates in attendance.

Birthday on a Boat!

Last Thursday the office accompanied Nicole Scope onto a sightseeing dinner cruise around Manhattan island for her birthday. It was a nice warm night to watch New York from the river, and there is little better company than the NMA Office team. As dinner was served, we discussed some of our upcoming projects, using pieces of food to construct ad-hoc representations of blueprints. The wait staff (also trained singers!) serenaded us with popular songs and served delicious champagne. Later in the evening, there was dance music and we all did our best to “rock the boat!”

A Green Roof in Spring

On Friday, Nicole Scope, project manager, is overseeing the installation of the “green roof” at the East Village Green Townhouse. Now that spring is here, it will be pleasant to lounge on the roof, among the multicolored sedum plants and under the shade of hanging vines. The construction of a green roof is complicated, and NMA has walked the clients through each of the stages, from discussing the structural load requirements for a green roof and roof membranes, to arranging the color of the sedum and finding the right seasonal plants. The attention to detail is worth it, though — green roofs come with substantial energy savings, as they trap heat in the winter and diffuse the sun in the summer.

Preparing for an Opening

Rebecca, who does interior design, just returned from uptown where she was picking out a range of color pallettes for the hand-woven Tibetan rugs we are installing into one of our Residential Renovation projects. Spring is nearly arriving, and we have propped our door open to let in the warm air and the cheerful sounds of a sunny East Village. We are working with the artist whose pieces we are showing in the opening and testing delicious wines to compliment the atmosphere. A prevailing mood of goodwill and hard work descends upon us all with the coming of the evening.

Glass Panel Design

Our new architect Nick visited one of our Upper-East side Residential clients today to work out the details for our new glass wall design. We are covering one wall with purple glass etched into patterns. The design’s aesthetic influnece comes from an artist who himself lived in the area many years ago: Piet Mondrian, and as a result we have been seeing a lot of his work in the office recently.

Hanging Rods

In preparation for our upcoming office grand opening / gallery show, we are attaching picture hanging rods to special custom-made moulding along the walls. Our marketing assistant Kenton has been dilligently working on the invitation cards and the artist’s detailed biography. We cannot wait to finally celebrate the completion of the office! Our general contractor, millworker, expeditor, MEP, and all others involved are thrilled to have it done as well. Hopefully we will see you here.
